Kawela Bay Makai

The scenic shoreline of Kawela Bay frames a 7.05-acre coastal property acquired by the City and County of Honolulu in 2015 to preserve one of Oʻahu’s most picturesque and ecologically sensitive landscapes. Tucked along the North Shore, the site features secluded sandy beaches, native coastal vegetation, and sweeping ocean views that make it a cherished destination for residents and visitors alike. Kawela Bay is also an important habitat for protected wildlife, including endangered Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and Hawaiian monk seals, which are frequently observed resting along the shoreline. The preservation of this land helps safeguard critical coastal ecosystems, protect marine life, and maintain the area’s natural character.

The City’s acquisition was made possible through a collaborative partnership with the State of Hawaiʻi, The Trust for Public Land, and other conservation agencies. Through this joint effort, development rights on the property were reduced by more than 60 percent, significantly limiting future construction and ensuring long-term protection of the coastline. The purchase secures open space, preserves scenic views, enhances recreational opportunities, and guarantees continued public access to the shoreline.
