Lower Paiko Ridge / Kuli‘ou‘ou Valley East

The City and County of Honolulu Clean Water and Natural Lands acquired a conservation easement over 3.497 acres at the back of Kūli’ou’ou Valley connected to a lower section of Paiko Ridge previously slated for development. This milestone completed a community-led effort to preserve the final parcel needed to ensure permanent protection of the ridgeline.  In October 2025, Livable Maunalua Hui transferred ownership of the parcel to Kupaʻāina o Kūliʻouʻou, a grassroots community organization formed by the Reeves ‘Ohana and lineal descendants to oppose urban encroachment along the eastern lowland hillside of Kūli’ou’ou. The conservation easement intended to protect watershed lands by reducing erosion, floods, landslides, and runoff within, around, and downstream of the site. As landowner, Kupaʻāina o Kūliʻouʻou will carry forward the kuleana of stewarding the land and protecting the stories, trails, and cultural resources, and integrity of the back of Kūli’ou’ou Valley.
